What happened to my SATA 750 drive

I have a PCI Sil 3112A SATA RAID 14.2.47 1997-2004 Silicon Image Inc.
card with 2 ports. One port is an existing WD 500 the second port is
for a new WD 750
(I am not using RAID)

I just installed the SATA WD 750G drive in my machine. It would hang
at boot.

I went to WD support page and found this:

The page says to install a jumper to lock the drive at 150 MB/s. When
I installed the jumper it worked fine.

I dumped an IDE drive to the new drive because I am going to use the
smaller drive in another machine. I took the IDE drive out

Now the drive hangs the computer at boot again. I even plugged in the
old IDE drive again.

I can unplug the SATA cable of the new drive and it boots fine.

I didn't do anything. How could it have stopped working again?

Is the computer trying to boot off the new drive? How did you "dump" the
IDE to the new drive? File by file or with an imager that transferred the
old boot sector?

Can you somehow access the BIOS of the SATA card to see if the new drive
is visible that way and make sure it's not the boot drive?

Make sure both the power and data cables are on firmly.
 
Is the computer trying to boot off the new drive? How did you "dump" the

The SATA drives are not the boot drives. I haven't touched the boot
drive. (IDE)

of the computer.

reporting the drive's size.

Consider clearing the CMOS, and jumper the new drive.

When you used the 1.5 limiting jumper the first time, was the other hdd
disconnected? Does the new drive work with other drive disconnected? Does
that other drive use a limiting jumper or not?
 
The 500 works with or without the jumper. (it did not have one
initially)

The 750 hangs now with or without it.

Did you try jumpering both drives?

Did you try the 750 jumpered with the other drive disconnected entirely?

That would be a good idea.
Unfortunatly to get my manual Abit wants to know socket type then
chipset.

I am sure every user knows this right off the top of their head.

I want to shoot someone at tech support. :)

The 500 works with or without the jumper. (it did not have one
initially)

The 750 hangs now with or without it.

Disconnect the power plug from the wall.
Take out the CMOS battery for one hour and then replace.
Jumper the drive

I've had problems with WD 750GB drives (perhaps ALL 750GB drives, I only
have WDs to work with right now) on Silicon Image chipped PCI SATA
controllers. I also have to jumper all SATAII drives to SATAI speeds on
my current motherboard + PCI SATA controller. Using a 750GB drive on my
PCI sata controller would cause a freeze before BOOT.

Check your boot order in the BIOS carefully. Mine had 'bootable add on
cards' selected and once the PCI sata controller was working properly it
tried to boot from this, and froze.

It hangs before it gets to the OS. There were too many drivers to
select from for me to chose which one to pick.

I didn't find a BIOS update.
