Did you notice that the backup program in Vista does not let you select
Directories or Files ? I have the Vista for Business version. Have they
removed a usefull backup program from all versions of Vista ?

I now need to use a 3rd party backup program to perform routine backups of
directories accross the network. I though Vista was supposed to be better.
Why reduce functionality ?

yes, this has been discussed to death for many months now. the old NTBACKUP
is gone... lets get used to it

I am sorry for asking if it might be in other versions of Vista . . I am
sure your time is too valuable to answer a question that may have been asked
the past.

Steve--

They have explained their perception of why they reduced functionality.

Backup FAQ
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pages/file-backup-in-windows-vista-faq.aspx

"The new File Backup is too simple. Why didn't you add more features, such
as location-based backup?
The file backup feature in Windows Vista is targeted at the core consumer
audience. To savvy users, it will appear quite simple, probably too simple
for you to use. For most consumers, however, it will hopefully be the right
balance of complexity and functionality to get them backing up their files,
which is something virtually none of them did in Windows XP, no matter how
capable the tool was. For core consumers, we wanted to eliminate the
confusion caused by selecting individual folders and files from a long tree
of checkboxes, trying to find or guess where other users kept their files,
predicting where files would be stored in the future, etc. These choices
added too much complexity to the backup process and discouraged users from
using NTBackup.

How are core consumers expected to benefit from File Backup?
File Backup creates an experience where you configure it once and it will
keep user files on that computer on a safe location from that point on. The
backup is updated incrementally on a regular basis chosen by the user when
File Backup is configured. Having a scheduled backup eliminates the need of
performing adhoc backups (which is supported by using "backup now" option)
at regular intervals. Without a way to schedule backups, a lot of users
would simply not run File Backup at all, and not remember to run it
regularly (until data is lost at least)."

You may want to supplement your backing up with the new Ghost Ghost Solution
Suite 2.0 or AcronisTrue Image 9.1 or Acronis Home 10.0

Thanks for Link. With shadow copy being such an improvement to the Windows
backup architecture, it is still unfortunate that a user cannot select what
directories to backup. I understand that you can backup MyDocuments, but I
have database content with many 3rd party file extensions that shouldn't be
sitting in a single users MyDocuments folder.

If I go to a 3rd party backup program, I don't don't know if it will do as
well at backing up open files.

Acronis is a good option, but my guess with Microsoft is to get you to use
the Windows One Care backup utility (in the suite). I actually like how WOC
works with XP/Vista (but, of course, it's Microsoft working with Microsoft),
but the backup utility in WOC still has the funcionality you require.
($49.00/year for up to 3 computers, along with windows Defender, etc.).

Hi

I'm not sure if this vbs backup script could do what you want, it's
free and works in a domain environment it also has a progress bar and
other great things, you just put the root path in the script of what
you want to backup. Have a look at www.dustan.co.uk Backup Script

Hope this helps
