What goes on in a file transfer between 2 remote shares?

I have a client with offices in the UK. The question has arisen as to
performance of a file transfer done from there, over here. That is, if
we have 4 systems:

File Share A in the US office LAN (A)
File Share B on another system in the US office LAN (B)
Desktop system C in the UK (C)
Desktop system D on the US office LAN. (D)

If he initiates a file transfer from A to B from C, what is the
difference between that and the same file transfer done from D,
performance wise, if anything?

The main thing is, when the file transfer is initiated between 2 remote
shares (A & B), is there traffic between A and C? Or B and C?. Is a
temp file of the file being transferred copied to C from A before then
being moved to B?

Thank you in advance for any explanation.

Hi Jptr

I'm pretty sure that if you copy a file from say serverA to serverB using
WorkstationC, then it copies it through the WorkstationC..

So the file will effectivly go ServerA >> WorkstationC >> ServerB.

Of course you won't see it happening, but that used to happen on the NT4
days anyway.

It would be faster to copy it direct from ServerA, or ServerB.

Hope this answers your question..
