I have a Sony DCR-TRV38 camera which does not come with i-LINK(firewire) cable, I believe it's a 4-pin, I am looking for a firewire cable that supports Sony camcorder and my PC (HP Pavilion 750N, which has a firewire port), any suggestion is appreciated.

Hi Kam,

You can get a 6-pin to 4-pin IEEE-1394 cable at
Radio Shack, or probably any store that sells
computer equipment. Here's the Radio Shack

Normally it's called a 6 to 4 pin FireWire cable. I've seen prices from $15
to $45 which does not guarantee anything. It should meet IEEE 1394
specifications and sometimes it will say Sony i.LINK compatible. I bought
mine at Best Buys for $20.

Thanks Bob, is that try that if the PC has 4-pin, we should get a 4X4 instead of 4X6 pin, right?

That would be correct, but I'd be surprised if your
PC has a 4-pin connection instead of 6-pin.

Thanks Rich, does your computer firewire is 6 pin? that's why you brought
6X4 cable?

Yes, my PC has 6 pin and my vidcam 4. I thought that was pretty much
standard, but I could be wrong. In addition to different pin count the
connectors are different shapes. To possibly add to confusion, they aren't
really pins, but look like pc boards and edge connectors. Obviously,
whatever you get has to match your system, that's why I bought my first one
locally at a place I could return or exchange with no hassle.

Thanks Rich, I got it from Bestbuy tonight (6X4), it works fine in terms of the connection. However, when I try to convert the video from tape to computer, but there is no sound there. What setup function did i miss on MM or on camcorder? Thanks.

FYI, & FWIW, some have both, e.g. several Sony Vaio models have 6 pin at the
rear and a 4 pin at the front.

There should be sound in the saved file if you capture in the "Digital
Device Format (DV-AVI)" mode. You might be saving in the "Best Quality For
Playback On My Computer" mode or some other selection. Here are my notes
that I made up a while back:

----------------------
Capture from DCR-TRV460 to PC with MovieMaker2

1. Run MovieMaker

2. Connect vidcam and PC with FireWire. Turn vidcam on. SET vidcam to
"PLAY/EDIT" mode!

3. "Video Capture Wizard: Sony DV Device" should appear. With two boxes
to fill in; the filename to use and the file path to use.

4. Next window comes up with 3 choices of file to create.

"Best Quality For Playback On My Computer"

"Digital Device Format (DV-AVI)"

"Other Settings"

Click/select: "Digital Device Format (DV-AVI)"

5. Next window asks "create clips when wizard finishes." I do not create
clips, just capture everything.

6. Next window has two choices:

"capture the entire tape automatically"

"capture parts of the tape manually"

I select "capture the entire tape automatically"

Turn off or do not select "show preview during capture". Watch video on
vidcam. No audio comes from computer either during this operation.

Press capture or begin capture on PC.

PC/Movie Maker will take control and rewind the tape. There will be
three sentences on the screen (amongt other info) which will show progress
by ckeck
marks appearing as they occur.:

"rewinding tape"
"capturing video"
"creating file"

Insure that at the bottom of the page "create clips when wizard
finishes" is unchecked (if desired). Sometimes I swear I do not select the
option in the
beginning and it comes up as selected.

Thank you so much Rich! I guess, it has no sound (if I close camcorder's screen), but it does have sound when I play it. Look through your note, this seems that (no sound) is expected. Thanks
