I only got my computer 4 months ago and in that time i've done 3 or 4 total
recoveries ie factory settings. This is because i have encountered problems im
unable to deal with and have sought help on the phone.Necessary or not these
racoveries seem to have left residual material on my computer in the form of
files folders and stuff in the 'all programs' menu that when i hover the
mouse over it it says 'empty'.what i want to do is sort the wheat from the
chaff but i dont know what is what exactly.I know not to tamper with certain
stuff on my C drive but other than that i'm stuck and its really bugging me
now. Also if i'm downloading from yhe web should i run, save and where should i
put it[depending on what kind of file it is]

go to control panel->add remove.
this is the list of intalled software you have.
learn to know and recognize what you have.

compare this with things on start->programs.

if items on start->program are bogus, you can
right click the shortcut and delete it.
bear in mind that doesnt uninstall any software,
only the shortcut to something
which may not exist any more, according to you.

deleting the shortcut does not pevent you from
runing something. most programs are stored
in the program files folder and you can drill down
to double click the executable.

Be careful what you delete. rule of thumb is
if you dont know what it is, leave it until
you do know well enough to make an
informed decision.

I doubt a reinstall from the OEM left stuff you dont need.
how about you just try a defrag and see if that helps?

right clicking your drive C->properties,
should reveal an imense amount of unused space.

when you download, you should save most of the time.
I have a folder I made called Incoming where I save
downloaded stuff to. under that I have more folders
such as mp3s, installs, pictures, etc. then I put it
where I want it, or make a new folder.

when you choose to run "now", you probably just want
to run it without saving any kind of install. If you
want the install, save instead. if you just want it run
then run it.
does that help?

take it easy over there. no need to reload every month.

turn on your firewall, get spybot and ad-aware and run them weekly.

if you want to know what something is, look up the executable in google.

Has someone told you to 'recover'? Or did you decide this on your own.

I have had experience with many Support Departments and many solutions have
always been (and only been), reinstall.

Prior to you next 'recovery', post here for help. We may solve you some
steps.

Also, just because a piece of software is free on the internet, does not
mean you should install it on an operational system.

If you have the space, install a testing environment, install there, test
and if passes, install on the operational system. Safest bet.

Thanks.Yes all recoveries/restores were 'informed' decisioins by support
departments. The last one was because i lost sound would you believe.I knew it
was unecessary because i'd been into my audio program which told me all was
well.it was obviously hardware but i went through with it anyway if only
because that was the first step before i could take it to be repaired [catch
22]I've since lost faith in such people.
Getting back to my files etc,i'm just being cautious as to what i delete.I
will take your advise and wait untill i can get somebody to sit down with me
and explain.
-- I'm still not sure where i should download to.Would it be the same for
programs music or whatever?
