We are securing out PCs with GPO in win2k. We have
created a list of programs that the users can run,
excel.exe, outlook.exe, and so on. When a user double
clicks and attachment they receive a restrictions error
becasue an exe is being called on that is not permitted.
Does anyone now the exe that is trying to run? Any help
would be appriciated.

Thanks Adrian.

It definitely sounds like you are preventing access to one or more drives.
Please see if either of the two previously mentioned KB articles help
resolve the problem by redirecting the temporary location for extracting
attachments.

The error states .."This operation has been cancelled due

We are using ntconfig.pol during bootup to set the
restrictions on the PCs. This error occurs even if the
attachment is a known item such as an excel spreadsheet.
I usually receive this message when a user tries to run an
exe that is not listed in the allowed windows apps portion
of the policy.

Thanks for the quick response.

Adrian,

What is the exact text of the error?

What version of Outlook are you using?

Does this happen if you double-click an .xls (Excel) file -- assuming you
allow users to run Excel.exe?

More than likely, this problem is coming from a policy that restricts access
to a drive (because Outlook always uses the \Temporary Internet Files folder
to open attachments). If this is the case, then the following two articles
might help.

296115 OL2002: Opened Attachments Are Saved in a Subdirectory in Your
Temporary
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296115

249793 OL2000: Attachment Temporary Files Always Stored in Same Location
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=249793

Hope this helps.
