I'd like to copy my small DVD tapes from Sony digital video camcorder. It's
an average on, maybe 3 yrs old, but it is digital and connects to PC via
IEEE 1394. Wondered if this is right idea?...

UPLOAD
Ok, so I connect Sony cam to PC, and click Capture. About an hour later
(right?, it's a 1-hour tape), WinMM on PC should ask what to name file,
right? To copy "exactly" what's on the DVD take...and to get "everything"
off the tape (no condensing, compressing, lossiness, etc.), what name
(extension or format) do I select? 2005MOVIES._____?

DOWNLOAD
Suppose I want to give a friend an exact copy of my original Sony DVD tape.
Would I just put in a blank DVD tape in Sony cam, connect it to PC, select
2005MOVIES.___ (that I already uploaded), then click "REC" on the camera?
Would the Sony cam then start downloading the movie? Would it be "exact" or
will there be loss, degradation, etc.

FOREVER DIGITAL TEST...
If I did this cycle 1000 times, would the 1000th tape end up an exact
digital copy of the first tape? LIke this...

SonyCam orig TAPE1 > Capture to PC filename > Save to filename > Open
filename > Record back down to SonyCam TAPE2

SonyCam TAPE2 > Capture to PC filename > Save to filename > Open filename >
Record back down to SonyCam TAPE3

....

SonyCam TAPE999 > Capture to PC filename > Save to filename > Open filename
Record back down to SonyCam TAPE1000

Thanks,
George

yes, with minor changes... but it's easier to use the WinDV utility if you
just want to copy the tape to the hard drive and then put it on other
tapes... there's a link on the Setup > Other Software page of my website.

the minor change is that you keep the camcorder in the VCR/VTR mode when
capturing or copying it back....

yes, it's an exact copy

I know we're talking hypothetical situation here, but 1000 tapes = 1000
hours (minimum) the whole point of doing things digitally is you can copy
and reproduce in a fraction of the time. consider taking your imported
tape, burn to DVD (or better yet dvd-image file) and then you can burn a new
DVD for a friend within a few minutes.

| Agree with PJ here. On the what format to select question, you select it
| before capturing and it should be dv-avi.

I agree with KDE.
Many people prefer saving on the magnetic media of a tape for archival
purposes as it is more reliable than DVD, and it truly is, but I still
prefer archiving on a DVD and my hard drive for the ease of reimporting to
use again later. I date all my DVD backups and every 3-5 years I plan to use
it to create a new DVD backup so I don't have to worry about losing it. I
figure the technology will come a long way in 5 years and I likely will only
have to go through the process of copying back to the HDD and re-archiving
on a new DVD once (hopefully).
