We Live For The One We Die For The One

Sick of the time it takes copy files and the way it makes your system
CRAWL.

Even SCUSSI is a choice for me as long as its fast.

Any IDE drives fast ??

Thanks.

Fastest ATA (IDE) is 7200RPM with 8MBs cache drives, any brand.
Western Digital has a new 10000RPM drive but only for Serial ATA

Sometimes system configuration affects speed.
Also reloading motherboard drivers can help ?
How are all your ATA(IDE) devices set up ?
Which operating system ?

Not compared to 15.000RPM SCSI server drives.
However a 70GB disk will be around 500 Euro and a
compatible controller will be around 300 Euro.

And this will only have limited effect if you are copying from
a disk to itself. Maybe 2-4 times as fast. Better get an OS with
decent write buffering and buy more main memory.

Crawl?
On what kind of system? And because of what? Because it has to wait
for the harddisk to finish or because of high cpu usage (in case you
have a really old ide system)

Define fast.
Is 60MB/s enough?

Modern IDE drives do really well when copying large files.

But when you copy loads of small files, which are spread over the
disk, a 15k scsi disk will be much faster because of the lower access
times.

You can also use a simple Raid 0+1 controller with a few drives to
improve speed.

It all depends on what you are doing with your system, what your
expectations are, the config of your current system, and if you have
loads of money or not.

Ive got XP Pro, ! gig pc 2100, Segate Barrcuda IV, 7200 rpm.

I think i have an Averge of 30 mb/s using hdtach.

Hi,

I found the Western Digital drives with 8 MB buffers faster than those without
a buffer or with a 2 MB buffer.

If your system slows down, maybe it is time for a defrag. Also check to see if
you are running out of space.

However...
The recent batch of large capacity WD xxxxJB series tend to have low read
burst speeds (low 70s) whereas they used to be in the 80s when they had
smaller platter sizes.
