I have WindowsXPpro.

When I transcode movies (from AVI to DVD,
typically) the "CPU Usage History" chart on
the Windows Task Manager is hard up against
100% for both sides of the dual-core CPU.

The chart below this, the "Page File Usage
History" registers 1.04gB. Is this the
RAM being used? If not, what does it
measure?

Please help, Frank

Thanks. I found that the settings in "My
Computer" and changed the setting of every
partition to "System Managed Size" and this
has reduced the PF usage to 800mb from
about1.04Gb. The HDD does not seem to
thrash so much now.

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more
informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Do you have one drive containing three partitions or three drives? I see
you have a 2 gb pagefile on each volume which I suspect is unusual but
not unknown. None of the pagefiles are fragmented. This surprises me as
I would have expected fragmentation if you have changed the setting to
system managed. I would not use system managed. All volume are
noticeably fragmented. You do of course have ample free space.
