I went to http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt and picked a couple of
address at random and typed them into my Restricted Sites. To test it, I then
typed these address into Explorer's address bar and the pages loaded. The
restricted sites icon appeared in the lower right corner of Explorer, but I
thought putting a site in Restriced Sites blocked that site from loading.

What does "Restricted Sites" actually do?

Thanks

Hi MWH :-)

Check the information below and see if it helps explain:

Setting Restricted Sites in Internet Explorer
http://www.webhero.org/Browsers/IERestrictedsites.htm

Setting IE Restricted Sites for Maximum Security
http://www.aas.duke.edu/comp/documentation/outlook/secure/ie-restsites.html

Adding sites/servers to the Internet Explorer Restricted Zone

Hope this helps.

I looked at those sites. They give good information on securing Explorer. My
question is what happens if I go to a site that that is in Restricted Sites?
Does Explorer block me from connecting?
Does it allow me to view the site after blocking only harmful content on the
site?
What should I expect to see so that I know the Restricted Sites function is
working?
Thank you.

Hi MWH :-)

When I try open at site that is in my Restricted Zone I either get an empy
page and at the bottom on the status bar I see the red dot with a while line
thorugh it, it is restricted. Or, I get a message on the page that says
that site is restricted.

There are other ways to restrict access to certain websites, the HOSTS file
and Content Advisor. Tehy may other methods that will also work to restrict
access to certain websites.

Content Advisor password

NOTE: Content Advisor settings apply to all users on the local computer
(global) and
cannot be changed by users who are not Administrators on the local computer
(Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 only). You cannot create different Content
Advisor settings for different users on the same computer.

Hope this helps.

That's what I was wondering. So if I've been able to load a page that is in
my Restricted Sites, something must not be working correctly in my set up.
Thank you for the information.

Have you read the IE helpfiles on how to properly add sites to the
restricted zone?

In general, Restricted Sites won't stop a page from loading. It applies
tighter security settings and that tighter security may prevent it from
loading if it has to violate the security settings to load.

Adding a domain to the Restricted Sites Zone does not block that site.
Restricted Sites Zone security level is "High" and it restricts certain
functions for that site (Active Scripting is disabled, ActiveX download /
Activex Initilization and other settings are disabled)

From IE help - "Understanding security zones"

Restricted sites zone: This zone contains sites you don't trust—sites that
you're not sure whether you can download or run files from without damage to
your computer or data. You can assign sites to this zone. The default
security level for the Restricted sites zone is High, therefore, Internet
Explorer will block all cookies from Web sites in this zone.
