I was reading some instructions that said
"Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button "

what does it do, to hold ctrl and click close ? /

hold control and click close.

I checked this link, which has some good shortcuts holding control and
stuff, but nothing about that one

When a window opens at less than full screen, you can hit the Maximize
button. But the next time that window will still open at less than full
screen.

So grab the title bar and move window to upper left corner. Then grab lower
corner of window and expand to lower right corner. Now hold down Control key
and hit close.

Well, you still haven't said . You just said try this and see what
happens. And you've made it appear as if dragging the window to the
top left hand corner makes a difference.

Anyhow.

If I open notepad, maximise the screen. Close notepad. It won't stay
maximised. It stays in 'restore' form.

It makes no difference whether I hold ctrl and click close, or not.

If I resize the restored form, and close notepad, then reopen it, it
starts up in that new resized form.

It makes no difference whether I hold ctrl and click close, or not.

So, when does holding control and clicking close make a difference?

Try this instead if you want Notepad (or any program with resizable windows) to
always open "Maximized":
1) right-click the short-cut you use to open Notepad
2) choose "Properties" from the popup menu
Once the properties sheet opens:
1) click on the "Shortcut" tab (it should open with that tab already chosen).
2) click on the pull-down arrow to the right of "Run" and choose "Maximized"
from the drop-down list.
3) click on "OK"

Your chosen program will always start Maximized after this.

In Gravity 2.6, build 2060, holding Ctrl down while one clicks on the "Close"
icon closes Gravity. So I assume it does the same in other programs.
I just checked it in IE 7, and the key/mouse sequence you describe closes the
main window, just as it does in Gravity. So my guess is, that mouse/key
sequence closes the current program. My further guess is, the Ctrl key in that
sequence does nothing, and is ignored when clicking on the "Close" icon.

It forces Windows to write the window's settings to the Registry so that
they're remembered next time you open it.

well, as I wrote in anoter post in the thread, I can't see an example
where holding control while clicking close, makes any difference.

can you give an example that demonstrates it?

That without control, the settings are not saved
With control, the settings are saved.

TIA

No, not specifically, since the default behavior is to remember. It's only
when that default procedure gets messed up do we recommend the Ctrl key
addition. All I know is that when I've needed it, it worked. Many others
have reported the same success.

My brain has been undergoing various trials and tribulations, so I've
trimmed my online communications to the Windows groups (well, not Vista,
<g>.) Any more than that and smoke starts coming out my ears.
