What does Filter applied mean ? 1514 items

Hi, I turned off our computer Fri morning the 4th, went out of town and
returned Monday, all e-mails prior to Friday are missing, but I noticed
bottom left "Filter Applied 1514 items. Did I accidentally hit a wrong key?
how do I retrieve the old e-mails? Bill
