What does asterisk as a formatting mark denote?

Suzanne,

The only way I can describe is by sending you the very document where
i saw these asterisks.
I'm sending you the file to your e-mail account.
Thanks.

DJ

The resolution was that they were evidently bullets in some font I don't
have (showed up on my system as ÿ or ASCII character 255).

Yes, and the bullets (appearing as asterisks in Korean Windows),
interestingly enough, did not print nor show up on the screen, unless
"show formatting marks" option is on, making me believe that those
were some type of formatting marks as well.

In many fonts, that character is represented by a square or rectangular box,
which is Word's "I can't print this" character and doesn't print.
