Hi Robin;
You probably won't get much response re: CounterSpy in here because it and
Ms AntiSpyware started off life with the same definitions, although they
claim that they have completely abandoned Microsoft's input at this point,
so it would have been like running two GUI's with the same database of
signatures. You might try looking at this independent newsgroup to get a
current user's opinion:

I think the other product your talking about is SpywareBlaster which I use
and really like. It adds restricted sites to Windows Explorer. of course
the opinions of the author JavaCool are used for this blacklist, so there's
some degree of trust you have to have, but he's been good to me so far. It
also controls CLSIDs which are like registry signatures of specific
malware. The neat thing about SpywareBlaster is that it doesn't have to
run in the background like WD RTP so basically you run it once and get the
benefit for no system overhead. Oh did I say it's Free, as long as your
willing to update it manually, but watch for Randy Knobloch's posts here in
Announcements when the new updates come out.

Hello Robin,

In addition to what Dave mentioned,

SpywareBlaster provides three types of protection: (1) It prevents
installation of known malicious ActiveX programs – without restricting
ActiveX program execution in general. (2) For IE 6 or later, it blocks
browser cookies from known malicious sites – without interefering with
desirable cookie use on other sites. (3) It adds certain known malicious
sites to the browser Restricted Sites zone

I'd assumed in my naivete that Defender would already be protecting me from
the installation of malicious ActiveX programs - am I wrong, Engel?

i read in newsgroups that spywareblaster had problems with Microsoft office
programs, they start to try to reinstall when you click on word, frontpage,
etc
have you seen this?
robin

dave- how do you not "have to have it run in the backround" i see no choice
for this?
please explain
robin

No, Robin, although the only part of Office I have installed on this box is
Word (via Ms Works), perhaps Engel has a more comprehensive version.

That's correct, the only time it needs to run is when your updating and
enabling protection in the form of set kill bits in the registry or adding
blacklisted entries to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites... (sorry for
the Windows Explorer reference in my last append). Once you have installed
those updates, they are held in the registry or IE's internet options,
SpywareBlaster is then through his work and can be completely shutdown and
not restarted again until the next updates are published and the cycle
repeats. SB's protection remains in place unless you disable it whether or
not the program is running. In other words SpywareBlaster is not even
added as a startup program within Windows.

well i installed it on 2 computers- will put it on my notebook tonight- and
had no problems with ms office so far.
