I was just looking at the BIOS chips on a few motherboards I have laying
around here. The one on my ~2000AD board is the same type I had on my first
IBM clone from 1990 - a big one you can remove easily by hand.

On my ~ 3 year old mboard, it has a little socketed thing called a PLCC
with 32 pins. Is that what they are still using on the latest mboards, or
have they switched over to something else now?

Suppose they all come in various shapes and sizes, have a peep here
http://www.karbosguide.com/hardware/module2a1.htm#ROM and I guess
these are the more modern ones.
http://www.kids-online.net/learn/click/details/bios.html In the
Gigabyte mobo I use there are two of them, one being a back up should
anything go 'wonky', I ain't counted the pins per side though.

I reckon it's alway's a good policy in getting a mobo with a dual bios
system, you only need look through HTFC pages and see how many people
have problems, especially after flashing, a dual bios system can be
configured to boot automatically from the good bios or can be selected
from bios.... meaning the mobo is never out of action.
