Greetings all,

Running Vista Home Premium.

I've noticed that some program icons on the desktop have a small icon (the
same icon for 'security center') beside it. Does anyone have any clue as to
why this is happening?? My only thought is that it's Vista's way of
signifying incompatible software. Both progs, BTW, seem to work fine - the
one's in question are 'Sonic Stage' and 'Spybot'

Thanks for any and all responses in advance,

Ray :)

A security shield on the icon normally means that the program or file is
protected by user account control (UAC), and you'll likely see the UAC
box come up when you try to open or move the file.

Athansian--

Can you post a screenshot of this. I've seen that if you have a folder that
won't let you in, so you change the security permissions to allow what you
want to do--sometimes dragging a folder with files from one drive to
another, that if you change permission you get a tiny corner of the regular
desktop icon filled with a small icon--and it may be the UAC symbol in this
case.

I would post a screenshot IF i knew how to do such a thing!

I didn't drag any folders with files for Spybot - i DID however import music
stored on my backup file into Sonic Stage. Just a few minutes ago i got an
error message when trying to open up Sonic Stage - something about
unrecognizable files possible due to restore points in XP (i dual-booting
with XP - same HD, different partition) I was able to fix the problem
(fingers crossed) by running program as Administrator. I had to do this
ALSO with Firefox as it would not open after installing some add-ons that
Vista took exception too (Flash) I was only able to run Firefox by running
it as Administrator.

Gee, thank GOD i know about running an unresponsive or unopenable proggie by
running it as Administrator or else i'd be totally frustrated, trying to
figure out how something can work one moment and not the next!!

P.S. Thanks for yours and Travis' reply - mucho appreciated (and any other
words o' wisdom that you can think of)

It's easy to post a screenshot--I don't do it often out of bandwidth
consideration, but there are times when it can help and you can crop them to
be quite small sacrificing acuity for NG purposes.

Tips:

Hit the Alt+Print Screen and you have it on clipboard.
In run box type mspaint>enter.
Stretch paint Window open large enough to include what you will be
capturing.
Click on edge at corner of white frame and you will see a dot and position
mouse over dot and you get arrow to size the frame.
Click on Edit on Toolbar>Paste
To left of color palate, click on the square dots and then your mouse will
be able to crop.
Crop to your liking, and you can also use Image>Resize to make it small
enough to put on the group.
I often use about 85%

Also if you type in mspaint in the Windows Help Website search or in Help
and Support in Vista you'll get instructions not to mention the Help from
Paint or if you google or msn search you'll get countless screenshotted
MSPAINT tutorials.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/default.mspx

Type in mspaint and you'll get all the directions you need.

There is also the http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html project from MSFT and
the Univeristy of Washington.
