what do i need?

moi

i have a computer running windows xp home edition and a
computer running windows 2000,my xp computer has an
external modem that connects to it with a usb cable but
shows up in the lan or high speed internet category in my
connnections,i want to connect my 2000 computer to my xp
computer so i hooked them up with the right cable,my 2000
computer attaching to my external modem via ethernet and
went on the network set up wizard and i made a floppy
disc as instructed that i was supposed to load up on my
2000 computer,the file was called netsetup, but when i
tried to load it there was a message saying that 2000 was
not supported in this way and that there would be help on
the xp computer,so i checked help and it said i would
need additional software,but what software?what do i need
to make it all work? please help!!!

Appreciate the long explanation but it didn't come out clear as to how you have this all hoked
up. You mentioned the XP connected to the modem and then you said the 2000 was
connected to the modem.

Let me paint a scenario for you. you want one machine, XP or 2000, connected to the modem.
Then you want to connect the other machine so that is can use the same modem to get out to
the Internet.

On whichever machine you have the modem connected to, then you need to enable ICS
(Internet Connection Sharing) on that machine. You will need an ethernet card in the machine
as well as the other machine. Plug both of these ethernet cards/cables into a hub. Now you
can access the Internet from either machine through the one modem. The second machine
will get it's IP from the first one from the ICS component, so set the second one to obtain an IP
automatically.

You can find out more about ICS in the help files of either Operating System with explanations
on setting it up.
