I want to be able give 2 people access to my "server" at
home so they can put in payroll information and maybe
check incoming faxes in Winfax Pro. I tried Pc Anywhere
and it is very slow even on a cable modem. I need them
to be able to print on their printers at home. Their OS
are both XP Pro.

I'm reading the posts here and it seems aside from the
server OS expense, you also have to buy a "license
server" license. What's the total cost for 3 (i have a
laptop)people running XP pro to access a "server" os
computer.

There are a few issues here:

1) If you only have two users connecting through terminal
services (and no more than 2 at any one time) then you can
put terminal services into remote admin mode. This mode
doesn't require you to purchase any TSCALs or setup a TS
licensing server.

2) If your terminal server is in application mode, then
you'll need a terminal services licensing server. You can
install this through your add/remove programs on your DC
(if in a a domain) or member 2000 server (if in a
workgroup). You only need Terminal Services Client Access
Licenses (TSCALs) if you have non-XP Pro or non-2000 Pro
machines connecting to your terminal server. These TSCALs
must be installed on the TS licensing server and the TS
licensing server must be activated (over the phone or
internet). You can purchase TSCALs through many internet
vendors, like GHA Accocitaes (www.gha-associates.com),
Insight (www.insight.com), or CDW (www.cdw.com). TSCALs
are typically like $25, I think.

Thank you for the quick reply Matthew. But with remote
Administration Mode will the speed of connection be the
same as terminal services? My Accountant said that the
speed was faster because it only sent the picture of the
screen not the data. What ever that means... Will they
still be able to print and access Quickbooks and winfax
under remote administration?

Yes, it's the same speed, same RDP v 5, etc. In 2003 and
XP it's called the remote desktop connection, in 2000
server it's call terminal service remote admin mode. It's
just limited to 2 simultaneous RDP connections, instead
of app mode which is only limited by server resources,
licenses, available bandwidth, etc.
