What do I need to run "Shared Desktop"?

A friend told me that all I need in order to run Shared Desktop is MSN
Messenger on both Windows XP computers.

Is this true? Or do I need the latest "Windows Live" messenger to have
this functionality?

It depends to what exactly you are calling "Share Desktop".
If you want to share files or do remote control from one computer to the
other, you do need the Internet or any account on the Internet at all.
For more precise answer you need to be precise in describing your needs

Thank you for the quick answer. Here is a more detailed description:
Both my friend and I have internet connection. Both of us have Windows
XP Pro. I know about the Remote Desktop utility, but that doesn't
allow him to view the screen while I take over.

I need a solution in which I can remotely see what he sees on his
screen, and move the mouse and use the keyboard so that I can
demonstrate to him stuff on the computer. He is a little new to
computers and he needs a lot of coaching - almost like spoon-feeding
him. :-) I know that RealVNC is capable of this, but I prefer a
solution that comes with Windows XP. Thanks.

Remote Desktop is Windows solution.
Otherwise, as you already know VNC is a Good solution too.
In specific UltraVNC, http://www.ezlan.net/vnc.html
AFAIK there is No inexpensive better solution than these two.

You need to use Remote Assistance not Remote Desktop. There is a
difference.

Remote Desktop is better for ONE person to access a remote computer.
If you use this your friend will not be able to see what you are
doing.

Remote Assistance is just that. You can manipulate your friends
computer with your mouse and keyboard and he will see what you are
doing. You can send messages back and forth while you are working on
his computer.

You probably will not be able to set up either unless you have static
IP addresses or are on the same network.

Thank you all for your answers. I now understand that "Remote
Assistance" is what I am looking for. Is it true that we both must
have Windows Live Messenger in order to use that over the internet?
