In some newsgroups, like music newsgroups, I get a file with the
extension of " .nfo ". OK, I realize this is an info file. Is it a
text file? I can't seem to be able to open one up.

As a standard Windows uses MSInfo32.exe to open a .nfo file, but some of them you can open with notepad.

Visiting

will get you the DamnNfo file viewer, this utility allows the display of the
ascii art that is contained in a lot of .nfo and .diz files

Didn't see OP but for .nfo files just right click and open with Notepad. If
"open with" isn't in right click hold Shift whilst doing it.
