Hi

Installing IE shouldn't be difficult but I am confused.

I have an "emergency" computer and yes , you've guessed it, I have an
emergency.

This computer is not linked to the NET and the only reason I need to install
IE is because I have error 0x80040705 when trying to install a
printer/scanner.

Apparently, the error is due to a missing registry entry concerning htlm.

I could enter the registry entry manually but I am assuming that I need to
have IE installed.

I have an old XP Pro CD with SP1 and SP2 has already been installed on the
computer to enhance performance.

The question is can I install IE from the CD in this case and which version.
IE for XP SP2 or 'other'?

Thanks

So you need a full download of IE6. Try this:

1) Download the file ie6setup.exe from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&displaylang=en

2) Save the file in c:\temp or somewhere where you can find it.

3) Now do:
START, RUN
and paste this in the box:

c:\temp\ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

4) Follow the instructions especially remember where the downloaded
files are saved. You will get the option to download for WIN98, WINME,
Win2000 etc. Select the version you want or select everything if you
have a very fast download connection. It is about 80MB for
everything!!!

Hope this helps.

If WinXP is installed, IE6 SP1 is already installed by default.

Post the complete error message.

Hello

This is what a friend said but as far as I can remember and see by using the
CD, the installation of IE is optional (although it may well be ticked for
installation by default)

I didn't install it but now it won't seem to install.

I am going to try to download the latest version to see if that helps.

Thanks

No. IE will be installed with WinXP. Access to it can be removed, but IE
has to be there; it's part of Windows.

With XPsp2 no, you can not install IE6sp1.
FYI The official recommendation is to reinstall XPsp2.
Ref. KB318378.

However, if you don't have the latest cumulative update for IE
you might get the same effect as an reinstall of IE by applying
that update. (Or if necessary, perhaps uninstalling it and reinstalling it.)

OTOH I agree with PA Bear that a more prudent tack to dealing with
your symptoms would be to properly diagnose them before adopting
unnecessary self-prescribed repair procedures.

Good luck

It won't.

IE is installed by default but it might not be /available/ currently:

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Compents >
Internet Explorer (check if unchecked)

Again, I'm not sure this has anything to do with your printer installation
problem.
