What do I need to allow internet connection?

Windows update site sticks at "Checking for the latest version of the
Windows Update software..." MS help site suggests turning off firewalls etc,
which I've done, but something is still blocking it. Internet Options all
set at Default.

Anyone know what the minimum set of services and start-up items is to allow
internet connection, if I disable others from msconfig?

Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for posting!

Let us clear the Temporary Internet Files to see if it is helpful.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click on Tools and choose Internet Options from the drop-down menu.
3. On the General tab, click on Settings in the Temporary Internet Files
section.
4. In the Settings window, click on View Objects.
5. This will open a new window entitled Downloaded Program Files.
6. In this window, locate and delete (remove) the Update Class file. Also
remove any other files that might have a damaged or unknown status.
7. Close the Downloaded Program files.

1. In the Settings window, click on View Files.
2. This will open the Temporary Internet Files window.
3. In this window, click on Edit\Select All, and then File\Delete. This
will delete all temporary Internet files including the cookies.
4. Now close the Temporary Internet Files window and click OK on the
Settings window.
5. Now you should be back at the Internet Properties in the General tab.
6. Click on the Clear History button and click OK when prompted.

If this problem still exists, please use the following steps to delete the
Windows Update directory:

1. Open Windows Explore.
2. Locate the C:\ Program Files\Windows Update directory. (Note: C:\ means
the Windows XP installation directory.)
3. Right click and select Remove to delete it.
Note: If you cannot view the Windows Update directory, please use the
following steps:

1. Go to Desktop, Right-click the Start menu.
2. Click Explore.
3. Click View and then click Folder Options.
4. Click the View tab.
5. In the Advanced Settings section, locate Hidden Files.
6. Check the "Show all hidden files and folders" option.
7. Click Apply and then click OK.

Have a nice day!

Hi,

Is this a current problem or problem you had in the past
as well? If you always had this problem, it might be your
MTU settings. With certian types of connections, Cable or
DSL, sometimes the standard MTU setting of 1500 prevents
you from accessing certian sites. I had the problem
connecting to Windows Update site, I changed my MTU
setting down to 1450 and had no problem since. If you
want to try it, there is a free program (at least it was
when I last downloaded it) called DrTCP. It an easy tool
to use and can change the MTU setting for you. If you are
using a router to connect to the net, you can usually
change the MTU settings in it as well.

Hi,

If Jeff's suggestion is not helpful. you may try the below steps:

Step 1:
=====
1. Switch to the Security tab, select Internet and click "Default Level" if
it is
not grayed out.
2. Clear the Trusted sites and Restricted sites.
3. Switch to the Privacy tab, click "Default" if it is not grayed out.
4. Click the Edit button and clear the Managed Web sites list.
5. Switch to the Content tab, click AutoComplete. Clear Forms and
Passwords.
6. Switch to the Advanced tab, click the "Restore Defaults" button and then
deselect "Enable third-party browser extensions".

Step 2:
=====
1. Click the Start menu and choose Run.
2. Enter msconfig into the open box and click OK.

3. On the Startup page, click Disable All.
4. On the Services page, mark the checkbox before "Hide All Microsoft
Services" and
then click Disable All.

5. Click Apply and click OK.
6. Restart the computer.

A dialog box will appear indicating that some changes have been applied to
Windows
Configurations. Please mark the check box and then cancel this dialog box.

Please check if the issue persists in Clean Boot mode. If it works well in
Clean
Boot mode, the issue probably can be caused by a third party application.

Please refer to the following Knowledge Base article and disable or
uninstall the
software that listed in the article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;241234

To return to the Normal Mode, please:

1. Click the Start menu and choose Run.
2. Enter msconfig into the open box and click OK.
3. On the General page, please choose Normal Startup and click OK to reboot
the
computer.

For more information about Windows XP Clean boot, please refer to the
following
Knowledge Base article:
