Suddenly my computer froze and I had to reboot. When I had rebooted my
<1 year old 120Gb WD hard drive was missing! I didn't hear any noises
but the drive didn't show up in BIOS so I'm worried that it may be a
mechanical failure... but how can I tell? What can I do now?

Check your cables and push the connecters firmly in motherboard and
disk. Some cables tend to get loose over time. Maybe that's why your
computer froze in the first place.

Those damned gremlins stole it.

Its more likely to be an electronic failure than a mechanical
one. Most likely the logic card on the drive has died.
but how can I tell?

Check the basics like its not just the ribbon cable that
has come off the drive or the power connector. If the
cables look fine, use one of the power connectors from
one of the cdrom drives as a quick check of that.

If the drive cant be heard to spin up, its
likely died if those basic checks are fine.
What can I do now?

Get WD to replace the drive. If the data isnt
backed up, you have a significant problem.
