I am trying to make a key for a Toshiba Satellite and I have found
directions that say to connect the following pins in order to make
this.
1,5,10
2,11
3,17
4,12
6,16 and
7,13

I have broken open an old printer cable and there is some grayish
material that was hardened over the wires which conceal which color
wire is going to which pin. I am slowly shaving the gray stuff off,
but I have gotten close to stripping the color coating on a few and
thought, 'there has to be an easier way'. Does anyone know if I can
just apply heat, water, solvent or anything to make this gray material
drop off? Any help is greatly appreciated.

As the printer is broken, use an ohm meter to sort out the wires.
