What causes the lock-ups?

I saved my project the other day and played it today. About half way
through it locked up. Most of the time, when MM locks up, the audio
keeps going but the display is frozen. Today, however, both audio and
video stopped at the same point.
I am able to keep windows alive if I kill moviemaker using ctl/alt/del.
Any thoughts? I doubt if this is from running out of memory. It could
be filling up a temporary work file but the lock-ups occur at different
places in the playback.

I have the same sort of problem. I have two different computers, one with
XP Home and the other with XP Professional. I have uploaded to Windows Movie
Maker from four different cameras and to each computer. Both computers are
heady machines: One is an eMachines Media Center PC with a huge, empty hard
drive and two-gig of memory. It is brand new and fast.

Movie Maker invariably locks up when I try to edit anything over six-minutes
in either computer. The only solution is to create six-minute segments and
paste into the master document without previewing. From there I can save to
the hard drive and then to a DVD.

I understand that this is a common problem and using Roxio does not solve
the issue. It is an XP problem.

All this is particularly vexing as I am poor but was forced to buy the
second computer, thinking that the first was bad. That one I sent to repair
twice. They just shrugged (after selling me a new DVD recorder and
collecting some more money).

Sigh.
