dear ng,
I have installed windows xp sp2 (home edition)
the windows directory is huge (about 3 Gb) !!!
To put that word "huge" into perspective, in these days of big
expensive hard drives, that 3GB of hard drive space is about $3.00
(US) worth. Really very little, and 3GB by no means unusual.
Unless you are very short of disk space, I wouldn't worry about this
at all. And if you are so short of disk space that saving at best a
portion of 3GB would make a big difference to you, you have much more
severe problems, and urgently need a new bigger hard drive. Anything
else you do will be just a stopgap measure.
I am looking for suggestions what can safely be thrown away - programs a
typical user like me won't use
(typical=e-mail, www, office)
That's a very difficult question for anyone here to answer, for two
reasons:
1. We have no idea what's installed on your computer.
2. There's really no such thing as a typical user. We all have
different needs and desires, and what I find useless may be your
favorite program--and vice versa.
You need to look for yourself to see what you have installed. If
there's something there you don't use, by all means uninstall it. But
don't expect to substantially reduce that 3GB.
