What brand of Motherboard is good?

It seem my bios is out of date for the larger harddrives, and I am not
too pleased with this MB anyhow because it has everything onboard.
I want to find a newer MB, and one with enough slots so I can install
my own PCI video card and a few other cards. Onboard sound is OK, I
dont need an onboard modem since I use an external modem.

I intend to buy something used, but newer. I cant afford a fortune
right now, and I plan to use my same Intel PIII 700mhz processor.
I want a MB with a fast and good chipset. I'll probably look on one
of the online auctions or at a local used computer store. I already
know that it would cost more to upgrade my bios than to just buy
another used MB, not to mention the other problems I have with this
MB, and also the fact that my onboard mouse plug is worn and the plug
often stops working because the plug is too loose.

What is a good brand and/or model to look for that will suit my needs.

Thanks

George

Good brands/models for your Intel P3 are offered as precious antiques,
if working.
Look for Asus, Gigabyte, or MSI...

Mouse sockets can be replaced (if you know how to solder and desolder)
or sometimes fixed with a dental pick to tighten up the individual
socket contacts, and HD size limits can be overcome, even for Windows
98, with a $10-20 PCI HD controller (see eBay or www.pricewatch.com).

Before buying any used mobo, it would be a good idea to check the
manufacturer's website to see if the manual and BIOS updates are still
available. Also don't accept anything with bulging capacitors on it,
unless you know how to solder -- see www.badcaps.net for more info.

You can buy a new mobo and CPU for as little as $80-100, such as from
NewEgg.com, Fry's, or TigerDirect. Currently, Fry's has an Athlon
4200+ or 4400+ with motherboard for about $99, but it requires DDR2
memory.
