what brand of hd

This is getting very frustrating.

Back in the day, the choice was simple -- Western Digtial or Quantum
WD and Quantum were very reliable.

Ever since WD went down years ago, the choice was simple -- Maxtor.
Again Maxtor was very reliable.

Seagate and Conner were just bad.


Now after they've tried to drive everybody else out of business, we have
only two -- Seagate and Western Digital.

Reading the reviews from amazon.com is frustrating. Hard disks crashed in
both brand and lost everything within a week or so.

So... what to buy?

I still prefer WD. Have never had a problem with them. Seagate was my worst
experience. YOMD

Funny, I never found Quantum to be at all reliable. And WD used to be
really horrible, but has improved in recent years.

Again, funny. I always found Maxtor to be very unreliable, especially
when coupled with their MaxBlast data destroying software.

expected for me, thought the SCSI drives were almost invariably better
than the IDE products.

Now after they've tried to drive everybody else out of business, we have
only two -- Seagate and Western Digital.

Also manufactured under the old IBM Deskstar name,
Fujitsu bought IBM out of the small HD business.

Over the years I've seen many failed hard drives with no one manufacturer
being over represented. They have all had bad models and/or batches. Maxtor
and Seagate are the easiest to deal with for warranty if you have to go
through the manufacturer. I personally use mostly Samsung drives for
workstations. They are quiet and the distributor I buy from looks after the
warranrty rather than having to go direct to the manufacturer. In the end
ease of warranty replacement is the major factor for me. They all quit
sooner or later. They're all reasonably fast now. If you are using them in a
RAID array then make sure the drives are compatible with RAID. Most drives
will work. Some work much better with RAID having special features for RAID.
They are generally at least 1.5x to 2x more expensive though.

One brand is superior to all others....

Seagate

WD is total crap.

Hitachi drives are loud and very very hot.

I would not trust any brand but Seagate.

Every single WD drive I have ever purchased has died within a year.

I have had two Hitachi drives...both died in less than 3 months.

*Every* Seagate drive I have ever owned is still working; one is over 10
year old.

And I always thought it was Hitachi that IBM sold the HD division to.....

There was some genuine competition over the years. Pretty much dried up
now.
All of em managed to make some quirky, and some quick to fail models and
batches in an effort to compete in quality and price along the way.
The last WD I got had a failure only determined by the mfrs software and
bios check of SMART. XP had no qualms using it, scary. The only genuine
drive failure I've had was with a WD 8.4GB. I've had many WDs inbetween,
most I still have and still going strong.
Also have 1 Seagate, 1 Hitachi, 1 IBM still going well.

What to buy now is as before. Its a toss of the dice. There's always a
batch of a model or two that may have problems from a given mfr.
 
Buy whatever size, connection style, and price meets your needs.

In 20+ years of having hard drives in my PCs, and having at least 1 of each
of those brands, none have ever failed on me.

So I have no favorites... it's just whichever meets my needs.

If a pencil's lead breaks are you going to forever not use a pencil?

No, but if a particular *BRAND* of pencil consistently breaks more than the
other brands, I would not buy that brand. That is what the OP was
asking...what *BRAND* would be recommended...

So, what is the ultimate answer for the ultimate question of life, the
universe, and everything; especially the hard disk?
Can we have something as simple as "42"?

Can someone just say... hmmm... "the best drive you can buy is Western
Digital right now."

well.... some did suggest Fujishi. But they were hard to find.

So, I rolled my dice and bought a 500gig Western Digital My Book.

Looks like it is a IDE disk inside the thing. IDE/SATA doesn't make any
different in performance if I plug this to the USB2/Firewire port....

I agree with Fujitsu. They are always rock solid. My Seagate's also
seemed to work forever although the Fuji & Seagate's were SCSI. Cheap
IDE's seem to fail as a matter of course eventually. I guess you get
what you pay for. Even IBM has had a slew of bad IDE Deskstar runs.

Unfortunately, excepting Fujitsu/Seagate, I think you have to get down
to specific models. Some IDS models are great, some have incredible
failure rates.

This is making me nervous though... I think I'll go do my backups.

There are other brands. Hitachi and Samsung are ones that I see
fairly frequently.

screwed up.
