What would be a good blueray burner to buy for backup of my files?
Does anyone have any good / bad experiences they would like to share?

I wouldn't dream of it. Depends on how often you need to back up. If it
was me, I'd get a nice external USB or firewire or esata hard drive
enclosure, put a ~320GB or larger hard drive (preferably Samsung or Western
Digital) in it and use an application like Acronis True Image to
automatically perform weekly backups to the external drive, using the
"secure zone" option (so the backup volume can't be accessed by anything
other than acronis applications, so virus activity for example can not touch
your backup). Or you could use multiple monthly automatic backups, starting
on different days. That way, you have a ~50GB backup from the 1st of the
month, then a ~50GB backup from the 8th of the month, and so on. The
advantage here is, you have more than one copy of your important files on
the external hard drive at all times. So some of them might be a bit older.

You can always set up your computer hard drives with RAID 1, also. That way
you'd have a real-time backup of everything, in addition to the external
hard drive backup of your data files. Or if you don't want to RAID, you
could always install a cheap, extra, internal hard drive to do manual or
automatic data backups to, IN ADDITION TO the external hard drive.

Heck, a couple of extra huge hard drives is going to be faster, more
reliable, and cheaper than any HD format DVD burner. So don't limit
yourself. If you want security, use a couple of extra hard drives for
backups. -Dave

Honestly, for backup purposes, who cares who wins the format wars ? I
agree with your post below saying an external hard drive is the way to
go, but consider the benefits of the blu-ray. Even if they lose, for
now you can get videos, and still use it to make backups. The price is
the big issue. You could buy a raid 1 setup AND an external hard drive
for less then the blu-ray burner.
