Hi everybody,
New member and a "newbie" at that.
To begin with have a Physical drive 160GB, partitioned into Primary(C:) and
2 logical drives(I: and J:). I use my I: drive to download programmes and my
documents to.
On checking my "Downloaded Programms" folder last night I found the
following files which I have no idea of where they came from.
1. mss16.dll
3.0.0.0
2. mss32.dll
3.0.0.0
3. mssb16.tsk
TSK File
5KB
4. msvcirt.dll
4.20.0.6164
Microsoft(R) C++ Runtime library
5. msvcrt.dll
4.20.0.6164
Microsoft(R) Runtime library
6. sh33w.32.dll
3.3.1.0

Any ideas as to what these are/where they may have come from?

Any input would be greatly appreciated and waiting in anticipation.
Regards

Some of these files appear to be related to WinAmp or a Scientific Word
editor. Did you recently install these? The MSVCRT files are basic
Microsoft C/C++ support library files.

Try doing Google searches on these file names.

Yep, that folder is used to download IE plug-ins, so that'd be normal.

Firstly thanx Rick @ Pat for your reply's

Rick -If these files are used to download IE plug-ins, why were they not put
within the IE folder in C:\ automatically?

Would they have come from “Automatic Update

With my previous PC, I had files all over the place, not knowing there
functions, whether they were from old deleted programmes, or whether they
were obsolete..…etc. I promised myself that I would be more diligence with my
new setup.

Should I just bite the bullet, create a new folder, name it IE Plug-ins and
leave it in I:\ or can I cut and paste the newly created folder into the IE
folder at C:\Programme Files\IE.

Did a google search: Didn't come up with anything that I understood.Went
into Microsoft "Help"-nothing there either.Tried to email "Microsoft
Support"-wizard stated that "No charge support is not available"!!!!!!!

Many thanks
Lucky

Hi lucky,

That is the system folder designated for the plug-ins, and they are put
there when you agree to install them. You can manage them easily from
Internet Options in the Control Panel. You will find the option on the
bottom of the programs tab ("manage add ons"). Do not move them to another
folder.

Please excuse my ignorance Rick but does the system folder not refer to the
IE folder in C:\

These files are present in I:\ (one of two logical partition in extended
partition)

Apart from the files we are talking about all other folders are internet
downloaded programmes(AdawareSE,Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster,AVG, DVD
Decryptor,DVD Shrink,ZipReader V8, and SisSandra Lie 2005).

To what type of download would I have agreed to for these plug-in's to have
been installed? Internet programmes? Microsoft Automatic update patches?

When you say I can arrange them, what do you mean?
Looked in "Manage add on's" but don't know what I am looking for.
None of the files concerned are visible.

Lucky

Hi,

During installation, IE installs to its program folder in the directory
hierarchy. However, the design of the program places files used for plugins
in the \downloaded files folder. You are attempting to make it more
complicated than it really is. This is part of the system, not something
customizable. A "system" folder is any folder created that is designated for
use by some system component - it is not specifically tied to one specific
folder or subset of folders. The files in that folder are created when you
visit a web site and agree to install files needed to support viewing that
page.

Thanx Rick,
For the sake of keeping I:\ organized and for future memory I will just
leave the files there, make up a folder "Internet Plug-in's" and drag them
into the folder.
Any perceived problems doing it this way?
Regards
Lucky

Hi,

If you move them out of the folder that is created for that purpose, you
will need to reinstall them if you visit a page that needs them. The system
will not look in your "Internet Plug-in's" folder for them, it will look in
the folder that is designed for that purpose (ie: \downloaded program
files).

Hi Rick,
I thought they were in my "Download Folder"
ie My computer >> I:\ >> Downloaded Programmes >> files concerned plus
internet downloaded programmes(AVG,Spybot......etc).

Is there any means of tidying these files up or will I have to just remember
what these filles pertain to?

Could you explain the "Manage add-on's" function - could I shift these files
to that location?

Regards
Lucky

Hi,

The "manage add-ons" function is exactly what you use to control the plug
ins, you don't need to move anything. You simply can use it to choose which
ones are allowed or disallowed. If you block one from being used, then you
can delete it as well.
