Rajesh,

Re: What are the five components of a design method?

This sounds like an exam question :)

Is it?

Rajesh,

Three things to remember.

1) Teachers often have a lesson that they want their students to "get".
This is often the fastest way to teach a newbie (someone without experience
or background) the basics of a field. They teach from a lesson plan that
they have created. Because these are created by the teacher, you will need
to ask the teacher what 5 components he/she singled out. There will be huge
differences between what elements or groups of elements the teacher feels
are important.

2) Teachers often do not live in the real world. Their concepts of what is
important are often out-of-date, over-the-top, or not practical in the
commercial setting. (Before I get nasty letters, I should also state that
there are some that are complete exceptions to this statement and do try to
teach valuable real world lessons. Unfortunately, these teachers are not
common.) In general, teachers have it both harder and easier than those in
the business world. They have to build a wide range of students into
graduates -- starting from scratch -- which is incredibly difficult. But
they also have it easier because if the student does not learn, it is often
considered the student's failure and only to a lesser degree their own. In
the real world, if the design does not sell the product/campaign/concept,
then often the designer gets sacked. There are no failing grades in
production work, just hungry families.

Learn from the teachers, time spent in class is not wasted. Also learn to
see the education as a foundation and not the complete lesson.

Oh, the third thing to remember, what works is right. Colors, layouts, and
such are only the means to an end. It is what is at that end that matters.
For example, if someone says, "Never use a lime green background", they are
wrong. There are no nevers in this world. In the right presentation, for
the right product, a lime green background might be the best way to connect
with the target audience.

Three things to remember.

I have been in hospital for week or so and now home. Downloaded hundreds of
unread Newsgroup postings. Came across your answer to Rajesh. It was a
wonderful letter. Credit for your understanding and truthfullness. It was a
delight to read. Now recuperating and have another 600 or so postings yet to
read.:-)
