What are the drawbacks of extending the schema...

What are the major drawbacks of extended the 2003 AD Schema with Exchange
2003 and having management pull the plug on the project. I know I can't
undo the schema change. So will there just be tabs and properties that
don't apply if we never go live, or will there be functional issues with AD
if Exchange isn't in place?

I am trying to get a firm commitment from management to support this project
100% before polluting my pristine AD forest with schema that isn't used.

There should be no issues with the extensions Exchange adds to the Schema.
There certainly will be no performance or operational issues.
