What are the dots called in an index leading to a page #

Deb

I am trying to type an index in Word for a cookbook. When using just the
period leading to the page number, my page numbers do not line up. Is there
another way to do it?

The dots are called a tab leader. If the numbers do not line up then use a
right aligned tab.

See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/NumberAlignment.htm (Word 2003 and
earlier) or http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/NumberAlignment2007.htm, as
appropriate. But note that whether you are actually creating an index
(alphabetical list of topics) or a table of contents (list of topics in the
order in which they appear in the book), Word can create it for you
automatically, and it also, by default, uses a right-aligned tab with a
period leader. See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm
and/or http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html.
