What are the alternatives to MM2?

I am having problems with PCM sound files in MM2.

While I am trying to get to the bottom of this, is there any other program I
should consider using - preferably free! ;-)

I am a total greenhorn in this area.

Comments appreciated.

I believe I read something there about some free programs
for conversion purposes, if that's what you need. Maybe it
will give you some ideas.

Maybe posting your question to a more general newsgroup would be better than
this Movie Maker one... such as rec.video.desktop
