What are services & do we need them all?

If you use msconfig you get a list of startup programs many of which you
don't need running. But the next tab over is labeled services & it's got a
much longer list of things that are running. What are these things? Where
do I find out just what they are & can I turn some, most or all of them off?

Do you wish to become an honorary member of the
"I didn't know what it was so I deleted it club"?

If your computer is running fine, leave the services alone.
If you wish to fiddle with them and begin turning them off,
your likely to end up having to completely reinstall Windows XP.
