Our cdrw went bad and I am trying to replace it. Product
that we bought is an cd-r/rw internal ATAPI/EIDE optical
drive. When I replaced the drive both the icons for our
cdrw and dvd drive disappeared from My Computer and the
dvd nor cdrw drive will not function. When the old cdrw
was put back in the icons reappeared and the dvd will
play but the cdrw is still crazy. Instructon booklet for
new drive says to make sure the "jumper settings" are
correct. What are they and how do I find them and set
them. Thanks, Lee

Jumpers are little devices on the drive itself that are
placed over pins, the resulting circuit or short tells
the drive what the setting it should use.

Look on the back of the drive, there will usually be a
little diagram.

Jumpers are physical "connections" on the drive to tell the controller
if it is a "Master" or "Slave" drive. On CD-ROM drives, the jumpers are
normally on the back of the drive, close to the IDE cable.

If both drives disappeared when you installed the cd drive, then chances
are you have the cd jumpered wrong (eg. both jumpered as master) and the
controller has no idea which one is which. If it sees two jumpered the
same, it will usually get errors and you won't be able to use either.

You have to know what jumper settings you need for your drive, since
they cary depending on manufacturer and drive model. You also need to
know how your hard drive is currently jumpered (probably "Master") and
jumper the cd drive as the other device on the cable...

Lee;
There are normally threes possible positions for the jumper
Master (MA)
Slave (SL)
Cable Select (CS)

Look on the back of original drive, area by IDE ribbon cable and power
plug.
It is very small (less than 1/4" x 1/16"), various colors but usually
black.
See which of the three positions the original drive is, the new drive
needs to be jumpers the same.
Sometimes there is a diagram on the top of drive, otherwise look
closely on the back for the abbreviations listed above.
