What are current thoughts about Firefox (mozilla) and Real Player?

Never having been a fan of RealPlayer, I find that I need to put it in (or
not). Is RealPlayer still as intrusive as I recall various posts years
gone by. Any freeware alternative(s)? Any freeware that acts to
discipline RealPlayer (like clean up any residual files, monitor open pipes
to the net, etc)? or does it even need such concerns?

From years of off and on lurking, I know that this is one of those
newsgroups that has some very knowledgeable folks. I hope you'll share any
tips.

Hi. I use Mozilla and when I come across a site that requires Real
Player, I use IE to view it. With that said, I am looking for an
alternative as well. I have been keeping an eye on a product (oddly
enough called, Real Alternative.) It can be found here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1054136293

I found out about it from here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4094.html

One thing that caught my eye was that major geeks reports:
"...Not fully supported are: Streaming smil files (.smi .smil) and
Realmedia embedded in webpages."

I only have a problem with the second part- the part about not playing
realmedia embedded in webpages. I *think* that means I wont be able to
watch files such as the types found on news sites. Nevertheless, from
one person who is looking for an alternative to another, that is what I
have found.

I appreciate the links (and I went ahead and acquired the file) but as
you already noticed, it d/n handle streams. Naturally that would be at
the heart of what I am seeking to deal with.

What are the current bad things attributable to Real?

On most forums, when the topic of RealPlayer comes up the complaints
tended to focus on its bloated size and pervasiveness. Most people
don't like the way it integrates itself into a system (messy uninstalls
IIRC). Here is one scathing review:

Sounds like TotalUninstall can handle the bloat install if that is the
worst of its offenses, although the article you cited gives some pause
too with its insistent intrusiveness.

I appreciate your comments, I have taken several steps in the direction
of a better understanding.

Scott...In addition to Real Alternative, which I use BTW but I don't do
streaming there's another product called Jet
Audio IIRC which also is a 'real alternative' I don't have the url, but a
search should turn that up. Someone should be along soon with the link. ;)

Looks to be an *alternative* music system as opposed to software that will
play realaudio data. But I do appreciate the tip, I read thru some of the
FAQs and I see a lot of potential.

Here's a recent comment on Jet Audio:
It has options to be your default Audio CD and DVD Player, and it
supports these file types:

669
AMF
AMS
ASF
ASX
APE
AVI
DBM
DMF
DIVX
FAR
IMS
IT
KAR
M3U
MDL
MED
MID
MOD
MP2
MP3
MPG
MTM
OGG
OKT
PLS
PTM
RA
RAM
RM
RMI
S3M
ULT
UMX
VOB
WAV
WAX
WMA
WMV
WVX
XM

I haven't tried it for anything except Real Media (including streaming
audio/video), so I can't comment on the rest. But from the list, you can
see that it's a comprehensive player. But it's never a good idea to dump
a player you're happy with. Jet Audio may be excellent at playing the
above file types, but you may still prefer the "look and feel" of WinAmp,
Quicktime, etc. That's for you to decide. In the meantime, Jet Audio
can do what the others cannot - namely play Real Media, including
streaming media, without having RealPlayer or external codecs installed
on your machine. For me, that's worth the 17 MB download, regardless of
any other file types it can handle."

The 'I/me' above is not me. I avoid any site that uses RA or QT.
