What Antivirus prog uses the lowest resources.

Hi I have tried many A/V programs and some are terrible in that they
cripple your computer. This has the end result that people often turn
the a/v or firewall program OFF, which of course is potentially
disastrous.

I have recently installed a well known anti-virus and internet
protection all in one from a very well known company and I find that I
have had to reinstall it all quite a few times as some virus or
spyware disables it. Their tech support just recomended re-installing
it when it stuffs up.

To me this is a bit like using three comdoms at once to be sure, to be
sure, to be sure. The only problem for me is that I am not Irish!

Are the latest viruses so clever that they know what files to find,
where they are located (if the default installation settings are
used).

So basically I really want to know what users think or know are the
best anti-virus programs, the ones that cripple a computer may have a
high "FIND or HIT" but if they ruin your computer's performance then
they become a real source of annoyance.

Any help/usefull comments would be a great help.

No AV will protect you from everything. Security Suites are the worst.
A multi-layered approach is best. Start with a router/firewall. Use a
separate spyware scanner and AV. I have more thoughts on my pages(see
below)

The best AV is an educated user.

I agree with the NOD32 choice. I've trialed several, and NOD32 is totally
unintrusive, and has good self-protection. It has been the only AV that
couldn't be killed off in my testing. Also has the fastest scan time
(about 45 minutes on my computer as compared to around 3 hours for Avast,
Kaspersky, etc).

Eset NOD32 - very low resources and very good protection.

Thank you all for your advice and help. I use 24hoursupport.helpdesk
quite a lot and it really annoys me how one gets so many abusive or
just crude advice, people want help not sexual advice (GF) etc.

The advice I have received here has been good and consistant.
I have removed the Fully licensed A/V that I was using (CA Evirus) and
installed the 30 day trial NOD32. It is quick, found more viruses and
trojans than my previous A/V. I used to allways use VET and its
latest and was allways happy with it but the latest creation has been
very dissapointing and does seem to be very sensitive to being
corrupted which has annoyed the SH.. out of me.

I don't think you'll be disappointed, and won't want to get rid of it after
the 30-day trial. I know that was how it was with me. I got so tired of
intrusive AV's, and NOD was so quiet that I couldn't bear to go back to one
of the other resource hogs. I'm glad you were able to get the advice you
needed. I know there is a lot of BS in the newsgroups, but there are still
some of us out here who are actually legitimately trying to help people.
