What antiviral software can I use?

So I wrote yesterday because I was having all sorts of problems with my
windows mail. I read somewhere that if I uninstalled Norton it might work.
So I did and now I can receive emails and all my email that had disappeared
have come back. I still can't send them though. But that aside (even though
it's doing my head in) what antivirus can I use that won't cause the problem
again?

Thanks loads - Kate.

See Delboy's response. Regardless you should make sure that any antivirus
software is set not to scan email. You should remove your mail accounts and
then close WinMail and then reopen it and then add them back again, after
using Norton. See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

With all respect to Steve, I allow email scanning with AVG Free v7.5 and
appear to have no adverse effects. But as always YMMV

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely
foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

In my numerous house calls for our computer club, I have had to remove
Norton 360 to clear up problems on both XP and Vista. I hope your good luck
holds.

That is a hit or miss. Eventually you will hit miss. Email scanning not a favorite of WM,OE or any other email client.

Some will go on without any issues but eventually they will also hit a brick wall at some point with different issues.

Hi Peter,

I accept that you sincerely believe your statement and have first hand
experience to support you, but I have been using AVG Free for the last seven
and a half years, the first seven on a Win ME box with OE and not knowingly
had any problems.

Everybody's opinions are valuable. As always YMMV.

I have been using "Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 20007" with my
Vista WM and everything works well. No problems at all.

I'm still using McAfee Virus Scan Plus and it's worked well for me for 8 -
10 years. I sure wish someone could come up with a solid answer.I can't
agree with a answer of "sometimes a computer does something this way and
sometimes different the next time". They pretty much work or don't work.

I wish it were as simple as "they pretty much work or don't work."
Computer operating systems consists of millions of lines of code,
some of it buggy, which interact with hundreds of programs each running
thousands of lines of code, some of it also buggy. It's hard to predict
when two non-compatible bytes of code will collide, much in the same
way that you can't predict the outcome of a Russian roulette spin.
