Can't see any of my files under the mouse pointer as I
drag them in Windows Explorer.

'Show Windows contents when dragging' is swithed on.

Brand new PC - is this maybe the way the latest version of
XP Home with SP1 works?

The setting you identified is not related to drag-and-drop. It affects
windows themselves. When you move a window and this is set, you move
the whole window, as it is, around the screen. When you move a window
and this is clear, you move an outline around the screen until you let
go of the button, then the window and it's contents just appear at the
destination.

I believe there is a setting for what you want but I cannot find it. I
noticed that on some computers when I drag and drop all the icons I
select are visible/outlined, while on other computers the icons fade
away the further they are from your cursor (so the one under your cursor
is light and foggy while others are invisible or almost so).

I see no image of my icons/files outlined or otherwise.
They are totally invisible when I drag. I do see the
image of a whole window when it is dragged though.

Driving me nuts!
