Paul--
I ran into that onoxious VX2 variant recently. To remove
it, I had to use HiJack This, Spybot, AdAware, Spy
Sweeper, and (most importantly) the Windows XP Recovery
Console.
If you look in System32 folder and sort by date, you'll
see a bunch of randomly named DLLs that are approximately
220KB in size. Delete as many as you can, then write down
the names of all of the remaining ones, then shut down and
boot up with your Win XP (or Win 2K) CD. Go into the
recovery console, and open up the system32 folder (under
the main windows directory).
Use the ATTRIB -R command on every one of those rogue
DLLs, and then delete each one. Then reboot in Safe Mode
and run every spyware scanner you can. (Probably a good
idea to install those before you start.)
Maybe Microsoft will eventually patch up this sieve they
call an operating system--but don't hold your breath.
