Hi all
A young friend of mine has a XP Professional computer. The copy of XP
installed is shown by WGA to be illegal. I persuaded him to buy a genuine
copy. How should he go about installing the genuine version without losing
his data or re-installing his applications? Does he have to use a repair
install? Please address any replies to the news group. My email address is
false. Cheers and thanks Bert

A repair install will ask for the new PID and install while leaving all
program functional.

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users
attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA
sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall!

see for instructions
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/purchase/UpdateInstructions.aspx

If it won't activate over the internet, you'll have to activate by
telephone.
