Old HD, in primary slave position, is recognized properly
by the motherboard and Win XP assigned it drive F.
however, Windows won't show any files or folders and says
it needs to be formatted. Norton scanned it in 2 seconds
and said it is a raw drive with nothing on it. Did I lose
8 GB of info? I tried coomand line syntax and still
couldn't access the drive. I ran WD diagnostics full test
and it found no errors. What do I do to retrieve my 8 GB?

Try it as Master on the Secondary IDE Channel. Move anything thats on
there temporarily.

Some of those "full drive test" will over-write all the data
while doing the test. Read the documentation for the tests
you ran to see if that is the case.

The firmware in an IDE drive will be recognized but the data
written in the magnetic media can be lost if the drive is
stored near magnetic/electrical fields, the temperature is
not fairly constant. You may have lost the data.

Are these drives basic or dynamic?
