Anyone buying a WD external USB drive and is running windows 98se be
prepared for a search for the driver. The morons don't have one in the box
or on their support site.
You have to call tech support, wait 45 min. and then beg.

Google found these using the string "Western Digital External Hard
Drive Driver", actually it was the very first hit.

Are they appropriate?

BTW, when all else fails, you can check the IDE-to-(firewire or USB)
bridge chip on the PCB, and download the driver from someone else
selling kits, empty enclosures, etc, using same bridge chip.
