Western Digital 120Gb burned

i have "or had" a WD1200JB hard disk...somehow it was smoked.....now i
want my data form it....i remover the PCB on the drive and it seems
replaceble....if i buy another drive or the "BB" model will it work ?

It might. No way to tell without trying. There is some elecronics
within the drive enclosure as well, which might also have been
"smoked". In that case a head-crash is almost sure to happen when
the disk is powerd up again with a replacement PCB, since smoke
particles are larger than the distance between head and disk
surface.

If the data is valuable, you should consider professional data
recovery and backup or RAID-1/5 for the future.

That's a definite maybe. Depends a lot on whether whatever smoked the
drive took the heads with it, and a little bit on luck. Don't bet your
life on it working, but some people have managed to recover data that
way. If the data is valuable then send it out to Ontrack or another
professional recovery outfit.

no...the data is not that valuable,but its worth another drive...and i
am sure that only one chip has burned not the phisicle drive.
the main point is "do the BB bored work on a JB drive"
