I have my Linksys befsr41 router with Westel new black modem (u call
bellsouth and they ask if you have the beige modem or the black one ). All
their webpages are still set up for the beige modem with old firmaware, so I
can't get help there.

They tell me I need to set my modem up with Bridged protocol. But when I do
that, my internet stops working altogether. It is working now in PPPOE mode,
so why should I worry about switching? And my linksys router doesn't have
the Bridged setting in it is protocols, so I wouldn't know how to change the
router settings to work with Bridged settings in the modem.

I assume they know what is best though, but when I change the modem settings
to Bridged and reset everything, my internet won't come back up.

Any help? Any webpages somewhere I can go to read how to solve this problem?

Bellsouth has some pages on setting it up. Yes, you put the modem in
bridged mode - connect it directly to your computer, go into advanced and
do that. Set your router/gateway on you computer to be the linksys (default
is 192.168.1.253 if I remember correctly). You may have to shutdown the
linksys and restart it.

I'm not certain about this, but I think that in PPoE mode the modem
itself handles the PPoE connection (including logging on with a UserID
and password), while in briged mode the device connected to it (the
linksys router in your case) has to handle the PPoE overhead (which a
Linksys router can do, but doesn't do by default).

My guess is that it could be setup either way, but that the "bridged"
connection will be a lot more difficult and complex to setup, and
there's no advanage to doing so. So I'd leave it in the PPoE mode.

If you want to use the bridged mode, you will have to go into the
linksys router's configuration and set it up to handle PPoE, which
involves configuring modes, logon userIDs and passwords in the Linksys
router. A lot of trouble for nothing, in this case, but if you want to
do it I think there's a writeup on it on the Linksys web site.

Nothing really needed to be done on my router I did bridged for the modem,
set the router to be the gateway and it worked.

You need to set the router to PPPOE and enter your user name and password if
your modem is set to bridged.
