I have a Belkin wireless router that I use to share my
broadband Internet connection. I am not interested in
file or printer sharing. I have two desktops running
Windows 98 that are "wired" into router and those
computers work just fine!

However, I have a Dell laptop with Centrino running
Windows XP. I can share the Internet connection just fine
until I enable WEP. I cannot figure out how to "log on"
with the passphrase or the key. At times it appears that
my passphrase or key is accepted and I get an excellent
signal but I cannot access the Internet. Other times it
pretends I never entered in anything at all and proceeds
to show me the available SSIDs in the area.

Can anybody please help me?

heh.. i know of your problem... the problem is the encryption.
when you go into the networking area of the XP , it will show that you can
join the SSID name. and click connect. when you do such it should prompt you
for the encryption code.
This encryption code is not the same as the paraphrase.
Go back and look at your routers config on the encryption. Normally most
routers allow you to paraphrase and also chose which key you want 64bit or
128bit (make sure this is the same on the XP) Also most routers when you
enter the paraphrase will automatically create a key (usually in a window).
The key is made up of numbers from 0-9 and letters from A-F in combination.
If the key is in a window... alot of the times they key exceeds the length
allowed by that window. If you click in that encryption window and
highlight all of it you can cut and paste it out of the window useing the
shift+delete and shift+insert key. also if you hit the shift+end key it
will highlight to the end of the encryption key.
open up a notepad window and paste they key into there. At that point you
can print it out or save it to disk. I personally like to save it to disk..
open up the file on the XP machine and Paste it into the password box.
one of 2 things are not happoning for you.. i would suspect that you do not
have/see all of the key or your useing lower case to type it in. all keys i
have seen so far use uppercase only.
hope this helps.

Hi there,
This is a problem faced by many XP com users..select 64bit WEP..
you can have the keys as
11.22.33.44.55
or
AA.BB.CC.DD.EE
Save the changes on both your router and the wireless
adapter...Make the changes on the router through a hard-
wired comp..and then enable the same keys on your wireless
computer..
I am pretty sure this will work, if it works you can think
of more complex hex keys and then opt for 128 bit
encryption also later..
Best of luck.
Thanks
