So, what nice cheap DVDRWs are on the market today then ?

Max £20 ... inc VAT & postage.

Some background history ...
The drive in question is getting on in years, a Lite-on 1633S ... been havin off-on problems for some time reading DVDs, and only DVDs ... won't read or burn, has no trouble with CDs reading or burning.

* please, Do Not suggest any Sony product, they are on my boycott list *

Wanna laugh ...

Vista plays DVDs with no bother ... well, as long as your DVD player isn't faulty ... but pop the same DVD into XP, with MP11, and you need a "plug-in" Codec to play.

These are not free ...

WTFeck is going on?

NEC & Philips are about the only brands of optical drives that haven't failed on me.

Off the top of my head have had faulty drives from these manufacturers.

Sony
Liteon (x 3)
Pioneer (x 2)
Samsung

And I'm sure there were more.

They don't seem to be built to last.

It really is worth considering a Plextor ;)

PS: I'm really pleased with the Philips DVDR 1660P1 I have in my main machine, it handles anything I throw at it.

Thanks for the link ... err, should have said, "any colour, as long as it's PC grey" ...

No, well actually I don't care what colour it is, but why is there a diff price for diff colours ?

I remember getting some MSI drives that came with 3 face plates you could change yourself ... still got some somewhere. :D

I think its down to economies of scale - they make and sell more beige ones so they're cheaper?

Go for the NEC 7170 in beige :thumb:
