While cleaning up my HD, I deleted a lot of jpg's and bmp's. I don't get
the Welcome Screen anymore. Just a login box. Anybody know which files I
need to reinstall and to which directory?

Thanks

You can use any image for the account pictures. Windows will create a new
resized file in that user's folders and then use it on the Welcome screen
and on the XP style start menu.

If you are truly missing the default images, these are normally located
here:
Documents and Settings\All Users\Applciation Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures\Default Pictures

There are 23 of bitmap files (*.BMP), each about 7kb in size: airplane,
astronaut, ball, beach, butterfly, car, cat, chess, dirt bike, dog, drip,
duck, fish, frog, guitar, horses, kick, lift-off, palm tree, pink flower,
red flower, skater and snowflake,

You could use Start> Run> MSCONFIG> General> Expand to expand each one from
the Windows CD to the folder mentioned above.

In addition:

Restore User Default Pictures [to the path which Sharon stated]:

Thank you both very much, BUT after restoring the files to that directory, I
still don't get the welcome screen.. I don't know what else I've deleted.
I have made sure that USE WELCOME SCREEN in USER ACCOUNTS is still checked.
Is there anything else I can do?

Wavelooper,

At this stage pinpointing the cause may be difficult, as there are number of reasons why Welcome screen does not appear. First, I would run a System Restore to revert the settings back. If not, try the steps here:

* Reset the GINA to defaults using this fix:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fix_xp_logon.htm
[Fix Logon/Restore Welcome Screen]. This should reset the default GINA in registry.

* See if Terminal Services is enabled. Services.msc applet [Needed for Fast User Switching]

* Make sure your computer is not configured to work in a Domain.
[Click Start/Run/type "sysdm.cpl". Computer Name > Change > Set it to "Workgroup"]

* Open Group Policy Editor [XP Professional only] and see if it is configured to force Classic Logon.

If this does not help, open the Event Viewer [type eventvwr in RUN box ] and see if there is any error reported there...In the system log.
