Welcome Screen Mystery

I'm currently set for the Welcome screen to come up for logon for 2
users. However of late when the Welcome screen comes up for either
logging off one user and logging on the other, or when logging off and
relogging on at a later time, it comes up normally but the password
field remains blank. In other words w/ no blinking cursor and I cannot
enter the password. It's just a blank field that accepts no input so I
have to restart. When I do a restart the Welcome screen and password
field work as they are supposed to.
